Description

Severe wildfire can remove protective cover and change how water enters or runs across soil. Subsequent rain may move ash, sediment and debris into rivers, reservoirs, roads and settlements.

Risk varies by burn severity, slope, soil, rainfall and downstream exposure. This issue concerns post-fire physical watershed hazards rather than long-term forest composition.
