Description

Wildfire impacts continue after flames are controlled. Burned slopes and watersheds may face erosion, sediment movement and flooding, while communities confront displacement, livelihood loss and long-term health effects.

Recovery decisions made without site-specific assessment can remove valuable habitat, damage natural regeneration or recreate the same vulnerable settlement and fuel patterns. Visible short-term outputs can displace monitoring of ecological and social outcomes.

This issue covers the period after a wildfire, including watershed, ecosystem and community recovery. Immediate suppression is outside its scope.
