In some rural regions, declining grazing, farming, and population reduce the maintained open areas that once interrupted vegetation continuity. Accumulated vegetation can connect forest, shrubland, and settlements across a wider landscape.
Abandonment also removes local labor and viable livelihoods needed for repeated maintenance. This issue is specific to abandonment-driven change and does not treat active agriculture as universally protective.
