Drought-Induced Forest Decline

#00041

The Sundgau region in southern Alsace is especially vulnerable to drought because it does not sit above the main Alsatian groundwater table. Its forests and water supplies depend almost entirely on rainfall, which has been repeatedly deficient since 2018.

#00073Drought-period water restrictions Done

Impose binding restrictions on non-essential water use during drought, and coordinate emergency drinking-water supply between communes when local sources fail. In the Sundgau this has been delivered by the Communauté de Communes Sundgau through prefectural alerts since 2018, with reinforced restrictions extended across all 64 communes from August 2025.

#00072Plant climate-adapted species In progress

Use targeted subsidies to fund the planting of at least two climate-adapted tree species per intervention in declining communal forests. In Alsace this is delivered through the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace's "Forêts d'Avenir d'Alsace" program, which has been running since 2021 and explicitly targets the Sundgau among other declining areas.
