Combine rapid diagnostics with prescribing decision support

Deploy validated point-of-care or rapid laboratory tests only with clear prescribing thresholds, clinician training, patient communication and stewardship follow-up. Depending on the clinical syndrome, tools may identify pathogens, measure inflammatory biomarkers or provide rapid susceptibility information.

The mechanism is faster distinction between bacterial and non-bacterial illness and earlier selection or de-escalation of therapy. Performance, cost and actionability must be evaluated in the intended setting. Trials show that tests can reduce prescribing when embedded in guidance, but technology alone may not change clinician behaviour.
