Teams should maintain guidelines based on local resistance, review high-risk prescriptions, provide prospective feedback, monitor duration and spectrum, and report prescribing and safety outcomes.
Stewardship reduces unnecessary exposure while preserving rapid effective treatment for severe bacterial infection. It requires reliable staffing, microbiology support, leadership authority and measurement of patient outcomes so that conservation does not become undertreatment.
