Eradicate or suppress invasive predators where feasible, then prevent reinvasion through surveillance, quarantine, rapid response and long-term local biosecurity.

#00343 Invasive species and pathogens reduce native animal populations
Location
Description
Use a site-specific program to remove or suppress introduced predators causing unacceptable mortality in threatened native animals. Where eradication is feasible, define the geographic boundary, verify removal, and maintain quarantine and detection systems. Where eradication is not feasible, sustain control at a level tied to native-species outcomes.
The IPBES invasive alien species assessment emphasizes prevention, early detection, eradication where feasible, and long-term control. Programs require strong evidence that the target species is a material driver, practical reinvasion controls, animal-welfare safeguards, and monitoring for unintended food-web effects.
This is not a one-time removal campaign — biosecurity and local response capacity must remain funded after the initial operation.
