Homes ignite from wildfire embers, flames and neighboring structures

#00250

Combustible roofs, vents, attachments and immediate surroundings let wind-driven embers and nearby burning structures ignite homes even beyond the main flame front.

Location

Description

Structures can ignite from embers entering openings or accumulating on combustible surfaces, from direct flame contact and from radiant heat or structure-to-structure spread. Vulnerability extends across the parcel and neighborhood, including fences, decks, sheds and stored materials.

This issue concerns ignition of existing buildings. The location of new development and critical utility failure are treated separately.
