Beech and Ash Dieback from Climate Stress

#00044

Beech and ash trees — historically dominant in many European forests — are in widespread decline. Drought weakens them while fungal pathogens (nectria on beech, chalara/ash dieback on ash) deliver the killing blow. The loss of these species is transforming forest landscapes and ecosystems.

#00045Beech and Ash Dieback

The Sundgau's beech forests, a defining feature of the local landscape growing on characteristic clay soils, are in serious decline. A 2023 study documented widespread beech dieback specifically on Sundgau soils, and ash trees are simultaneously being destroyed by chalara disease.
