Evaluate reproductive biotechnology under scientific and welfare controls

#00360

Test assisted reproduction and cryobiology for threatened species through staged, independently reviewed programs that protect animal welfare and support a defined recovery objective.

Description

Evaluate tools such as semen, oocyte, embryo or tissue cryopreservation, artificial insemination, in vitro embryo production and related reproductive methods when conventional breeding cannot adequately preserve or reproduce a threatened population.

Development should proceed in stages from biological feasibility and welfare review to validated protocols, genetically informed use and integration with an in situ or reintroduction plan. The IUCN SSC ex situ management guidelines provide the broader decision framework for linking ex situ techniques to conservation goals.

Reproductive biotechnology is species-specific and can require substantial research with uncertain outcomes. It should not divert attention from controlling threats, preserving natural behavior, maintaining living populations and securing habitat.
