Essentially all electricity a data-center consumes is converted to heat, and in the standard design that heat is rejected to the atmosphere through chillers or cooling towers. In the same neighbourhoods, buildings burn gas or use electric resistance heat to raise water and air to similar or slightly higher temperatures.
Where heat is captured the volumes are meaningful. Meta's Odense facility delivers about 215,000 MWh a year (~45 MW) to more than 12,000 homes through Fjernvarme Fyn, using ammonia heat pumps to lift the temperature to 70–75 °C, operating since late 2019 (Ramboll). Stockholm Exergi's open district heating scheme had around 20 suppliers by 2022, recovering heat equivalent to 30,000 apartments (EU Covenant of Mayors). Equinix's Paris PA10 facility recovers about 10,000 MWh a year at 28 °C, lifted to 65 °C by heat pumps (Data Center Knowledge).
