Description

Conservation breeders produced golden skiffia and prepared fish through pond and semi-natural mesocosm stages before release to the species' native Teuchitlán River. More than 1,000 fish were released in November 2022 with local community participation. The project report found that fish conditioned in mesocosms adapted more readily than fish moved directly from artificial ponds, supporting staged preparation and continued recapture monitoring.

Lessons learned

  • Semi-natural mesocosm conditioning before release improved adaptation compared with direct transfer from artificial breeding ponds — a staged preparation protocol is preferable.
  • Releasing large numbers of fish is an output; reproduction, recruitment and persistence are the recovery outcomes that require post-release monitoring to confirm success.
