Description

Van Long Nature Reserve protects the largest known population of Delacour's langur through reserve management coordinated between the Ninh Bình Forest Protection Department, community-led patrol teams (including former hunters), the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, and Fauna & Flora. Work includes securing limestone habitat and extending protection to nearby populations within the species' restricted range.

Lessons learned

  • Community patrols are more effective when local participants hold legitimate, formally recognised roles with long-term institutional backing — recruiting former hunters has been a specific strategy here.
  • Protecting the core refuge population is insufficient without simultaneously addressing limestone quarrying, which remains an unresolved habitat-loss driver.
  • Securing satellite populations adjacent to the main reserve is a necessary component of species-level recovery, not an optional add-on.
