Description

Brazil enacted Law 14,944 on 2024-07-31 to establish a National Integrated Fire Management Policy. The law formally recognises ecological and traditional fire use, prevention, response, recovery, shared governance across federal/state/municipal/civil-society actors, and a national fire information system spanning multiple biomes. Implementation is ongoing.

Lessons learned

  • A national policy framework can legally distinguish beneficial (ecological/traditional) fire from destructive fire across different biomes, enabling differentiated management rather than blanket suppression.
  • Legal recognition must be followed by funded institutions, operational plans, fire brigades and transparent evaluation mechanisms to have practical effect.
