Description
The 2017 Chile megafires spread across plantation and mixed landscapes at a scale that existing edge, fuel and response arrangements did not contain. This case records a context and execution failure in limiting plantation continuity and settlement exposure during extreme conditions.
Lessons learned
- Plantation-edge measures must be assessed at landscape scale and under extreme weather, not only ordinary fires.
- Post-fire restoration should avoid recreating the same continuous and similarly aged fuel structure.
