Break plantation continuity near settlements — Central and south-central Chile

Description

During the January 2017 Chilean megafires, plantation and mixed landscapes in central and south-central Chile burned at a scale that existing edge treatments, fuel breaks, and fire-response arrangements could not contain. The event revealed that plantation continuity — large, similarly aged, single-species stands adjoining settlements — was a critical factor in fire spread and settlement exposure. Neither forest owners nor Chilean fire-management authorities had implemented landscape-scale discontinuities or maintained low-fuel transition zones adequate for extreme fire weather conditions.

Lessons learned

Plantation-edge and fuel-break measures must be designed and tested at landscape scale and validated against extreme fire weather scenarios, not only ordinary fire conditions — the 2017 event showed that measures scaled to normal fires failed under high wind and drought.
Post-fire restoration in affected areas should explicitly avoid recreating continuous, similarly aged, single-species fuel structures, as replicating the pre-fire plantation layout recreates the same ignition and spread risk.
