Case study of
#00225 Sell waste heat into a district heating network at a market price rather than donating it
Implementer
Meta with Fjernvarme Fyn, engineering by Ramboll
Timeline
Since Nov 1, 2019
Location
Description
Waste heat from Meta's Odense facility is captured and lifted by ammonia heat pumps from 30–40°C to 70–75°C (the temperature Fjernvarme Fyn's network requires) and delivered into the municipal district heating system. It has operated since late 2019. Three pre-existing conditions made it work: Denmark's mature district heating infrastructure with near-universal city coverage; a municipal utility counterparty whose incentives align with decarbonisation targets rather than return on capital alone; and a contracted (paid per MWh) rather than donated heat arrangement, which gave the heat pump investment a revenue stream. Replicators without an existing district network cannot apply this design directly.
