Case study of
#00008 Passive-cooling urban design plus formal heat governance
Implementer
Wiener Stadtgaerten (MA 42, City of Vienna parks department) with Raintime GmbH
Timeline
Since Jan 1, 2020
Location
Description
In 2020 Vienna converted Esterhazypark into its first Cooling Park, combining a misting Coolspot pavilion and mist showers (delivered with Raintime GmbH), depaving, 8,600+ perennials, and a 400+ m² green wall on the park's WWII flak tower. The city reports local cooling of up to 6 °C, though this figure comes from the city and vendor and has not been independently verified. The cooling effect is hyper-local, creating comfort pockets rather than neighbourhood-scale temperature reduction. The park is sited in Mariahilf, a comparatively well-off district, raising equity questions about siting priority.
