Founded in July 2023, Giesskannenheld:innen (watering-can heroes) organizes Essen residents to adopt drought-stressed street trees and water them through dry spells. The logistical backbone is a network of 1,000-litre public water tanks placed in neighborhoods and refilled through partnerships with local utilities, so volunteers do not need to carry water from home. The model has been replicated in Soest. The initiative addresses establishment-phase drought — the primary cause of urban tree mortality — and supplies the maintenance layer that planting campaigns typically omit.

Lessons learned
- Establishment-phase watering is the missing maintenance layer of urban greening; organizing volunteer watering is as operationally valuable as the planting itself.
- Utility partnerships for public water tank refills remove the main logistical barrier to volunteer tree stewardship and make the model scalable without per-volunteer infrastructure costs.
- Volunteer stewardship models still need independent survival data to prove impact; build mortality measurement into the program from the start rather than retrofitting it later.
