Description

After a sharp rise in suicides on the Vienna subway following its opening, the Austrian Association for Suicide Prevention introduced media-reporting guidelines in 1987 and worked with journalists to change how subway suicides were covered (less sensational, less prominent, no method glorification). Subway suicides and attempts dropped abruptly and the reduction was sustained for years.

Lessons learned

  • Voluntary media guidelines, when adopted by outlets, produced a large and durable drop in same-method suicides — an 84% reduction in the first period and ~75% sustained over five years.
  • Requires active, ongoing engagement with journalists rather than a one-time appeal.
