Description

PANAF-Premium is a freeze-dried polyvalent antivenom requiring no refrigeration, with a manufacturer-stated ambient shelf life of approximately 4 years. A preclinical study evaluated PANAF and a 'Panafrican' ICP product against venoms of five medically important Eswatini species, motivated by Eswatini's near-total dependence on a single refrigerated product (SAIMR Polyvalent). Clinical effectiveness at scale is still being established, and shelf-life claims originate with the manufacturer and remain independently unconfirmed.

Lessons learned

  • A heat-stable format removes the cold-chain barrier and can reduce dangerous dependence on a single refrigerated supplier, improving supply resilience.
  • A lyophilised product must still be efficacy-matched to local venoms through preclinical cross-neutralisation testing before deployment.
  • Manufacturer-sourced performance claims (shelf life, stability) should be treated as unverified until confirmed by independent preclinical and clinical evaluation.
