Description

Litterati is a litter-mapping app where users photograph and tag litter, including the brand of each item. The resulting brand-level data has been used in extended-producer-responsibility (EPR) discussions and legal proceedings, and cities use the geospatial data to target cleanup and prevention efforts.

Lessons learned

  • Brand-level tagging produces data that can support accountability mechanisms such as EPR legislation and legal action against specific producers.
  • City governments can use the geospatial litter data for evidence-based cleanup and prevention planning.
